London Featured Event

Kim Angel, Event Director
It's been too long I guess - well, actually, it's ever happened before, so it's damn well time, isn't it girls and boys? It's the First National Transgendered Celebration, called Sparkle 2005, to be held on 25 June in Manchester along Canal Street.

This long awaited celebration will bring together clubs and groups from around the country for a day long celebration, and there's so much to fill your plate with on that day! There will be bands, exhibitions, parties, clubs and more. Supporters of the TG community are invited to come down and celebrate alongside the UK's diverse transgender population.

According to the official Sparkle website, "We have our own form of expression, style and attitude. The world now realizes that Transgender is vast and not 'black and white,' from full-on frilly maid outfits, to wearing nail varnish, to cutting your hair short and wearing only trousers. Being TG is not limited to any sex or any culture." Preach on, girl! Why not help spread the message that being trans is a many-splendored thing and includes many different identities within the culture.

The art exhibition will be from 11am-4pm, with all sorts of projection, photography and different media by TG artists. There will be different speakers throughout the day, but these sessions require RSVPs and are filling fast. And from 1-4pm, look for free nail polish, compliments of Roses and Angels by Nails Maid.

A "Miss English Rose" competition will take place. We're told that it will "be about neither dress nor looks, but be a traditional test of feminine deportment and poise," which only sounds right to include the many different looks of the community. There will also be a fashion show, the Miss Sparkle 2005 competition (which is an actual beauty contest) and a performance by the infamous TG band Elephant Shelf, who will be rocking out for your dancing pleasure.

If you're into the club crowd and still have your energy pumping, there are four clubs for your partying pleasure - Transmission at Prague V, Club Angelic at Via Fossa, One (a combination of Tootsies and Stormes), and GWRB (a chill out club) at Taurus. Taurus will also be hosting a full photo studio as well, so you can commemorate YOUR day.

There's a full map on the official site with information on where and when all events will take place. This should help you find just the celebratory event that will make this a memorable day for you and all your loved ones.

Sparkle is proudly supporting The Gender Identity Research & Education Society, and money raised that doesn't go towards making Sparkle a success will be donated to GIRES.

There are lots of places to stay, auctions that will be held and other fun festivities - too many to mention here - so I suggest you check out the site, pick a hotel and party your little toes off. It's a worthwhile event, it's long overdue, and every girl and boy deserves his or her own day, don't they?

I say they do!
