Manhattan drag legend Sweetie has had her opera-gloved hands in a whole lot of pies: from Queen Mother at the defunct Meatpacking District's Mother to the Lower East Side's Cheez Wiz. She's graced every stage in the city, treating spectators to her unparalleled dramatic lipsynching talents. Now she has finally reached the pinnacle: Broadway! Well, almost! Miss Sweetie is bringing her enormous drag persona to the theater district with the weekly "Ultimate Drag Off!" Set up like a madcap mix of vaudeville and crazy 70s game shows, the audience will participate by voting for their favorite performers throughout the night as they belt out show tunes and scary ballads. It may not be pretty! Sweetie says, "This is 'Whose Line Is It Anyway meets 'American Idol' meets 'Let's Make a Deal' in drag!" And perhaps throw in a bit of Hedwig and the Angry Inch! "The great thing about doing this show is I have the luxury of being a hired performer instead of actually producing the event like I have done so much in the past," Sweetie tells us. And she does deserve the headlining spot! She continues, "The show has some really fabulous qualities reminiscent of game shows in the '70s and '80s. At the end of the show each week the audience has a chance to choose how the losers die by picking a big box and seeing what's behind it -- very 'Let's Make a Deal,' but with a sick twist."
"The show is at 9:30, which gives a great window of time for the rest of your night as well as an early evening for people visiting from out of town," Sweetie explains. "I really think it's going to be on the raucous side, because the performers/contestants will be coming from all walks of life. It's not just professional drag performers; it's everyday Joes: men, women, big name queens and some surprise celebs." Since the talent will vary wildly from week to week, every show will be unique. And with the audience members being an integral part of the entertainment, there's the potential for things to get totally out of hand. There will be additional surprises throughout the evening and if we know Sweetie, you can expect almost anything; we've seen some pretty shocking things on her stages! "I'm extremely excited about doing a show in midtown on a beautiful stage with a great room," Sweetie tells us. "Dillons, which sits almost across the street from the infamous Studio 54, is very unassuming on the outside. It looks like a typical Irish pub, but the performance space in the back is incredible. It's comfortable, its a little chic, and the stage is terrific." "Wanna play with us and be a star yourself?" Sweetie asks. "C'mon and give it a try! We accept amateurs to professionals. Heck, even if any A-D list celebrities want to give it a try...THIS is the place to do it!" All potential drag superstars are invited to visit the Drag Off web site and step up for the zaniest talent contest in Manhattan! In an effort to explain why she's making the big change to such a mainstream midtown audience, Sweetie says, "Performing for fast-thinking East Village types really keeps me on my toes, but a nice audience of hipsters, tourists, bachelorette parties and curious souls really is more of a challenge. Every night you have to find your comfort zone with the crowd and feed off of them to do a really fabulous job." She adds, "I'm looking forward to an absolute circus every Friday night!" So are we, Sweetie!
