Walking through the doors of the Leland Hotel in Detroit is like stepping from a black and white movie on the streets of Detroit in gloomy November and into an early 20th century setting. But as you walk up the stairs and through the curtains of the Exotica expo, you enter a world of sex toys, beauties, colorfully dressed models, fetish enthusiasts, and even some average looking people just looking to find something colorful and unique in such a grey town.
The Exotica daytime expo showcased all kinds of shows, quality vendors with everything from chainmail to corsets to sex toys, and a variety of workshops for almost any question about fetish, sex or even modeling. There were models walking around constantly greeting the crowd, photographers looking for the best shot, and friendly open-minded people all around. Not only were there people from the Detroit Metro area; the expo also brought together vendors and fetish enthusiasts from the surrounding states as well as from Florida, Washington DC, California, Texas and even a few from Germany, Spain and Italy!
The Expo was hosted by international fetish model Angela Ryan, and I flew in from Los Angeles to host the VIP room. Some special guests included Dj Curse Mackey, photographer Lithium Picnic, and fetish model Vivian Ireene Pierce. Each model put on an excellent show on the main stage and Curse Mackey got on the turntables in the main room. I also did a special performance on Saturday night in the VIP room, as well as in the main room. The expo was created and ran by Ally of Chaos Productions and international fetish model Vena.
The nighttime parties were amazing! Friday night was a night of runway shows presented by the vendors of the expo, including Pink Label corsets, Delicious Corsets, and NooMoon. Vena and I co-choreographed the Pink Label corsets fashion show and we also modeled in the show along with Ally, Angela Ryan, Synth Doll, and a group of Chaos models. I met some wonderful people that night. Everyone I talked to told me they were having a great time. I even brought my younger sister Erica, who usually isn’t really into the scene, but she came out to the party Friday night and said she had a great time. She is even planning to come back to the next Exotica! There really were a great variety of people there, from the extreme fetish partygoers to the first-timers, and there was absolutely no drama, other than the performances on the stage, of course. The party went until 4am, but by 3am, I knew I should tone it down and get some rest for the next party, and another night to remember at the Masquerade Ball on Saturday.
Saturday night even topped Friday night’s party! The VIP room sold out instantly and then the entire expo sold out by the end of the night! Obviously the next one will need a larger venue since the Labyrinth and Studio 54 bar couldn’t hold this massive crowd. The shows ran constantly through the night. I was running back and forth from the VIP room, where they had naked buffet girls, to the main area where there were so many shows going on, there was no possibility of getting bored. Not only were there numerous performances in the main room, there were also several special performances held in the VIP room for those guests who wanted something a little extra. I’ve been to Bondage Ball in Hollywood, California and the Rubber Ball in London, England, and Exotica’s performances definitely rivaled any of those other fabulous fetish events. The drink prices at the bar were also great for such an excellent party.
Again, this night went on into the late hours of the night, but there were plenty of after-parties in hotel rooms if you were looking to keep the party going all night. All of the people I had met in previous years of attending Chaos events in Detroit were there to have a good time and meet some of the newcomers from other states and other countries that have finally had a chance to see what kinds of great shows and great people Detroit has to offer to the fetish world. This event still has some room to grow but it definitely shows signs of possibly becoming an internationally well-known event in the next few years. It’s the only one of it’s kind in Mid-west America and it fills a void for many mid-west Americans who are interested in the fetish scene, that never get the chance to travel to the west coast or abroad to some of the other large fetish events. I was pretty amazed with the overall response. In such a grey town where it’s the most difficult to create a successful business or event, this was actually something that got a lot of support and brought together people from outside the area. Detroit is lucky to have an event like this in their town. I’m really looking forward to the next Exotica event. They have me hooked now, I thought that I’d only come back to Detroit every once in a blue moon, but now I have the feeling I’m going to be making a lot more trips to Detroit, I better add up my frequent flyer miles!
